Website Development

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

So for this project, we were tasked with making a website that is targeted towards an audience that we research and based on the research, we would target the website on that. For me, I have chosen to look at universities and how this can be targeted towards that audience. The reason I have done this is because it is the necessary progression route I plan to pursue in the future and I felt like this would be best because of that main reason. After establishing the progression route I wanted to go down, I then started to research showreels and portfolios and analysed those different portfolios based on the perspective of a university and how it would allow a university to access certain elements easier. Something that was conducted in research was 'desired audience' and a constant theme that arose from that was the fact that everything was so accessible and was easy to find and it didn't take too many clicks to be able to access some of the creator's content. I found this extremely beneficial when it came to progressing and building my website up.

The first thing I wanted to do was completely rework the website. The first version of my website was bland, rushed and included most work from a template. I decided to change this because I wanted my design to be unique and I wanted to take full advantage of the opportunities available while also making it easily accessible for a university type audience.

So I started reworking the original text on the homepage where the user would be coming on, so I was thinking about what I could do and I decided on an idea that was actually quite trendy and would be perfect design to show off to universities as it would show I have a creative mindset and I am able to be relevant. So the design I wanted to go for was an idea of the same word or phrase but in different fonts, also being stacked as well. The inspiration for this concept actually came from a few promos on Instagram, here is a similar example (just without the font change)

As you can see here, the phrase in question is '5 weeks' and it is repeated over again. I really liked this design and I feel like I could apply it pretty well to my website, it shows I have creative diversity.

I first started with finding fonts in the library of wix that I could use, I found the fonts 'Lobster', 'Trend' and 'Stencil' would work perfectly as they were all bold and I felt like it would be best suited especially when outsiders are looking at the website. The next thing I wanted to do was add my name and put that with the design, this is how it turned out.

I thought this looked really well. However, I also wanted a background to complement it - something nice. Originally when looking for a background, I chose a colour switch video that cycled through many different colours with the text being the forefront, I thought this would be a good idea as it would make the website a bit brighter... However, this was a problem because the colours were too bold in my opinion and I feel like the backbone of my website is to keep it calm with dark colours so it's easier on the eyes. After ditching that background, I then went instead for a moving cloudy sky background, I felt like this was better because not only did it complement the text but it also allowed a bit of a darker feel in a good way to the website and it was calm in the way it softly moved.

For the overall feel of the website, this was perfect. I also added a small button below the text that, when clicked would scroll the user to the introduction section, making it easier to access.

I then moved on to my introduction section. Now, my first introduction section I created was relatively bland with no imagination or thought into it whatsoever. The most I had was an animation. So, to go with the corporate image of the font concept, I decided to use that on the introduction title, I thought this went really well because, in terms of showing universities, it would be good because it would show a theme across the website and thats what I am trying to convey here which I believe would be beneficial.

Overall, I feel like the introduction is simplistic and that's how I like it and I feel like it will look really good for universities in understanding me and my work as it goes on through the course. In terms of the text of the introduction, I did keep it small and short because I want to make the website as minimal and simplistic for someone to read as possible.

The next thing I decided to work on was a portfolio page. I also noticed on the research I conducted that another theme throughout them was a portfolio page where all of their work was presented. I decided to make this too so that universities could look at this and have a look at my work properly. The first thing I decided to do was to make the page, I did this by going onto the menus sidebar and creating a new paged named 'Portfolio'. This also got added to the navigation bar too.

After doing this, I decided to then start work on my portfolio page itself. The page first was just blank, but then I thought of adding a gallery that will show a couple of my projects that I could showcase. I decided to choose my Final Major Project and my title sequence project from the Level 2 media course. I felt like this would be the best videos to showcase the work I have done so far, it'll also show universities I have experience from the previous course.

After this, I went back on to the homepage and added 2 other buttons called 'portfolio' and 'blog'. I felt like this was good because although it can be seen on the navigation bar, it is also good to have it on the homepage too because some people may not immediately look at the navigation bar to navigate around the website. This also improves accessibility too.
