E.D.F.A.T Shooting Styles and Preferences

Updated: Nov 6, 2019

E.D.F.A.T is a method used in media and photojournalism to help with a photo essay and to allow certain aspects of production and that process to inform how you would go about executing the piece of media you are doing. In class, we looked at a powerpoint that explained the different parts of E.D.F.A.T and allowed us to understand it more. Here is the presentation:

So E.D.F.A.T is an abbreviation for 5 different aspects of photography and filming:

- Entire

- Details

- Frame

- Angles

- Time

Entire

The aspect of Entire is to incorporate a whole environment into a photograph. In photojournalism, this technique is used to introduce a subject or environment to viewers and readers. This is important as it can establish a point in which to start talking about the subject.

As we can see from this photo, this is introducing the subject to an audience, it is showing a situation involving the police and some protestors and that is an interpretation that can be received from this image, which is incorporating and ENTIRE environment.

Details

The details aspect looks at the details of the subject, this can involve going close up to a subject, interacting with it but also paying close attention to your surroundings and experimenting with different photography aspects such as ISO, shutter speed and focal length. Focusing on a distinguishing feature of a subject can help with keeping the focus on the subject.

As we can see from this photo, we can see the details of the subject in terms of the situation, the soldiers are beating up a couple of civilians and we can see the details of that with the soldier about to kick one of the civilians.

Frame

In terms of frame, this is about how the frame is presented, moving around the subject and experimenting with different frames. For example, maybe putting the background in the foreground, vice-versa. However, it is important to keep within the rules of composition.

In this photo we can see that the photographer has used a unique style of taking the photo, he has the subjects in the hole of the chain and that being the focus along with the scenery in the background being in focus too. The only thing that isn't in focus is the chain itself, this is a great example of framing.

Angles

Angles in photography and photojournalism is something which is important. This aspect looks at how the subject would look from a different angle, would it tell a different story?

This angle is at a dutch angle and it shows a protest, this is a good angle to use as it actually ties in with the photo pretty well, highlighting different parts of the crowd using that angle.

Time

The time aspect looks at how different shutter speeds or how a photo is taken at a certain time can affect what is presented and how it is presented. Time is an important part of capturing 'the right photo at the right time'.

From this photo, we can see that this was taken the perfect place at the perfect time, composing this photograph. This goes back to the aspect in photojournalism especially that it is important to get the right photo at the right time.
