In class, we looked at Mise en scene which is an important part of the filmmaking process. Mise en scene is a French phrase that means 'telling a story' or 'telling on stage'. Mise en scene can be represented through many different aspects and it is often split into different parts to gain a better understanding. In class, we looked at a video that helped us understand this technique better, this video split the video into different categories. These categories were, Set Design, lighting, costume, location and props. All of these contribute to the wider picture being that they all create a mood/atmosphere for the production that is in line.
Decor (Set Design)
One of the important things about mise en scene is the fact of stage design. This can be the main premise/setting of the scene, whether it's set in a building, a city landscape or any other place, this is an important part to allow the audience to recognise where the scene is established and this can be done through props.
Props
Props are an essential part in telling a story visually, they can be used to allow the audience to understand the surroundings in the area in which the actors are acting in. There are 2 types of props that can be used. We learned one type of prop is called Set dressing, these types of props are often seen in the background and are used to establish the location in which the scene is filmed. The second type of prop is just a prop which is used by an actor, this can be as simple as a piece of paper or as complex as a sign, these props are used by the actors, sometimes with significance to the story they are acting in. For example, in star wars, there is a use of a blue lightsaber by the jedi and a red lightsaber by the sith, this can link to the overall connection with whether they are bad or not.
Lighting
Another important aspect on building a really effective scene is lighting. Lighting can be used in many different ways with many different techniques in order to build a certain mood or atmosphere. To put it straight, Lighting is the pathway to building an atmosphere in a visual story. One of the more common lighting set ups is three point lighting, this involves a key light, this is used as the main light for the actor, the next light is the fill light which is used to support the other side of the actor in the light. The final light is the backlight and this can be used to highlight a character and put them in the spotlight.
There are also variations of techniques in which the lights can be used. The first lighting technique is high-key lighting, this is normally used with bright lights that compliment bright colours. There is also low-key lighting which more focus with duller colours in more dull scenes.
Costume
Costume is one of the more important aspects too. This can dictate the personality of a character and the persona of a character before they even speak. The way they dress and look can be a big indicator in a movie or production in how they act or will act as the movie/production goes on.
